Catalonia is the fifth most important European region in terms of employment in the technology sector

Catalonia is the fifth most important European region when it comes to companies providing medium- and high-technology jobs, according to Eurostat, the community's statistics office. The last available figures, from 2004, indicate that in the principality there were around 255,100 employed in the technology sector, just behind Lombardy (Italy), Stuttgart and Oberbayern (Germany) and Île de France (France).

This figure represents 9% of total employment in Catalonia, which in 2004 amounted to 2.9 million workers. The technology sector created jobs in areas like chemicals, pharmaceuticals, IT, electronics, car manufacturing or producer goods. In Spain as a whole, this percentage lowers to 4.9%, two points below the European community average
