The Tarragona petrochemical facilities to receive four biodiesel projects

Tarragona could become the Spanish biodiesel capital, thanks to four top-level projects that are being prepared by some of the companies operating at the city's petrochemical park. La Seda, BASF and Repsol have announced plans to produce biodiesel with investments totalling some 156 million euro. The Dutch multinational Shell is also considering its own project.

The Tarragona petrochemical complex has the advantage of being well linked to the city's port facilities, thus allowing it to quickly transport soybean production, one of the raw materials, from its Latin American suppliers. The three companies already committed to biodiesel will provide factory space and form alliances with other companies, all experts in biodiesel technology. La Seda has signed a deal with the Basque group CIE Automotive, while BASF has done so with the Catalan group Hemeretik and Repsol with Acciona.
