When it comes to entrepreneurial spirit, Catalonia fares better than the Spanish and European average, according to a study by the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, released by the Catalan government's Department of Labour. In 2005, the growth rate for entrepreneurial activity in Catalonia increased to 6.8%, well above the Spanish (5.7%) and European (5,5%) averages. "Catalonia is in a very good position with regard to its entrepreneurial ability," confirmed Mireia Franch. 

The study analysed the percentage of people between 18 and 65 years of age who had been involved in setting up an entrepreneurial project that has existed for at least three and a half years. Of the countries included in the survey, only Ireland showed faster growth. An important statistic shows that 8.4% of people in Catalonia own already established businesses, ahead of 7.7% in Spain and 6.2% in Europe.
