Barcelona and Tarragona to have a research institute on energy

Catalonia hopes to strengthen its place in the renewable energy sector with the creation of the new Institute for Research in Energy to be set up in Barcelona and Tarragona. The new institution will target research in the areas of energy efficiency and renewables.

The new center, which is to get financing from the Spanish central government, the Catalan authorities, universities and private companies, plans to have about 150 employees, and expects an investment of 28 million euros over the next six years.

The Institute will have two headquarters; the one in the Catalan capital will be in charge of studies on efficiency and energy-saving measures while the one in Tarragona is to analyze biofuels and offshore wind energy generation.
