Family reunification

What is the Family reunification?

Reunification is a right of foreigners residing lawfully in Spain. This right is recognized by Law and it can be applied for those people who have lived in the country for one year and that hold a residence permit valid for at least one more year. The persons who are eligible for family unification are: the applicant's spouse, the children (adopted children included) and dependant ascendants of the applicant or the spouse. Children who are under age and disabled can be also reunified if the applicant his/her legal representative. The applicant may be required to have accomodation which meets general safety and health standards and sufficient resources to maintain the  members of his/her family.

Procedures for the Family reunification

  1. Foreigners that wish to exercise his/her right will have to request for a family reunification authorization on behalf on the members of his/her family that wish to reunify. The person may be required to have adequate accomodation and stable resources sufficient to maintain himself/herself and the members of his/her family.
  2. Legally resident foreigners that have been resident in the country for a period of one year and hold a residence permit valid for at least one more year can apply for family reunification in Spain.
  3. Once the family reunification application is granted, the responsible authority authorise to bring oyer the applicant's family. Once in Spain, family members receive a residence permit of the same duration of that of the applicant.
  4. The right to family reunification for those people who are legally resident thanks to a previous family reunification will have to comply with some conditions.
